I am always happy to show people around our beautiful synagogue building in Auburn, and to answer any questions about Temple Shalom or about Judaism. We are proud of the many different religious, educational, cultural and social programs that we offer, and are always looking new ideas for additional programs. We welcome into our congregation anyone who is interested in being a part of the Jewish community of Central Maine. If that includes you, I look forward to meeting you and to your joining our community.

About Rabbi Hillel Katzir
As the rabbi of Temple Shalom in Auburn, Maine, I welcome you to our home on the Internet. I have been the spiritual leader of Temple Shalom since 2003, after several previous careers as an attorney, a journalist, an electrician, and various other jobs. I am originally from Los Angeles, CA, where I grew up in a Jewish, but non-observant, home. I lived for a total of nine years in Israel, all on kibbutzim, and served in the Israeli army. Upon return to the United States, I attended law school, then went into private practice, first in California and then in New Mexico. I also began exploring the rich traditions of Judaism, and singing in a synagogue choir. For several years, I served as a High Holy Day Cantor for synagogues in Arizona, California, and Iowa, and in 2001 I left law to become a full-time cantor. Two years later I came to Maine as the spiritual leader of Temple Shalom, and in 2004 I received rabbinic ordination from the Rabbinical Seminary International in New York. I have three grown daughters, two grandsons, and live with my wife Suzan in Lewiston.
